Character Education

Highlands Academic Curriculum is designed to teach skills that contribute to each student's ability to function in real life situations at home, school, work and in the community. Each student is assessed at the beginning of the school year to establish a base line of knowledge and skill. Then custom curriculum is developed based on state standards.

All curriculum is mapped to achieve all state standards in Ohio, and is completely individualized to each student.  Curriculum includes:
Regular assessment of goals.
Remediation loops where necessary.

A licensed intervention specialist is employed as the instructor with additional instructional aids. Classrooms are limited to six students each instructional aid. This low student to teacher ration allows Highlands to provide a learning environment that is focused on the whole child, including  intellectual, physical, social and emotional aspects.

  Diagnostic Assessments
Computer-adaptive diagnostic test are given and used by educators for for student placement, and to do progress reporting. By administering a reliable and valid test that adapts automatically to each student's instructional level and reports results instantly, educators gain clear snapshots of students' performance across a range of subjects.

Functional Behavioral Assessment
Functional behavioral assessment is generally considered to be a problem-solving process for addressing student problem behavior. It relies on a variety of techniques and strategies to identify the purposes of specific behavior and to help IEP teams select interventions to directly address the problem behavior.

Vocational Evaluation
Vocational Evaluation are comprehensive, systematic process in which clients and staff work together to identify and assess the client’s vocational interests, abilities, strengths, weaknesses, aptitudes, and functional limitations relative to the client’s preferred rehabilitation goal or employment outcome.
